South Carolina was the first state to secede from the Union because of the Election of 1860 (Abraham Lincoln). The South believed that he was anti-slaveholding and had the favor of the Northerners interests. After South Carolina seceded, seven other states followed. The South didnt like Abraham Lincoln because of his beliefs of slavery. He didnt think it was bad, but he didnt think it was good; he just wanted to release the spread, which the South disliked. The South did not believe that Abraham Lincoln was a good president for everyone (the North and South), only for the North, therefore they make their own government, the Confederate States of America and made Jefferson Davis as president.
There were many differences caused by slavery in the North and South. This caused tensions between the Northern and Southern states, resulting in many compromises and conflicts.
The Missouri agree (1820) stopped Slavery from spreading into the Northern states, (36® latitude and 30® longitude). The Wilmot Proviso (1846) banned slavery in Northern territories; still the South still wanted more slaves. Everything the government was doing was abolishing slavery and the South didnt like it, considering how they depended on it for revenue.
Most of the Civil War and seceding of the Union was caused from differences between the North and South. The North was industrial, which depended on raw materials obtained from the South to create into manufactured goods inside factories.
