The archaean 1820s were a time when textile manufacturing in New England was booming. There were textile mills along with caparison for the mill workers being built along the Merrimack River in Lowell Massachusetts. When the plants loose the workforce consisted mainly of young women. This was a big deviate for the women who had previously been stuck in domestic purposes exclusively.
Women in the boarding theaters lived in refinement quarters, a factor that also played a role in the growth of community. A typical boarding house accommodated 25 young women, generally crowded four to octonary in a bedroom. There was little possibility of privacy within the dwelling, and pressure to conform to group standards was very strong.(Dublin) The women were subject to build strong bonds and friendships because of the large amount of time they fatigued together.
The typical work week for the Lowell Girls was between 70 and 75 hours. The women were grossly underpaid and in many cases were tempered almost exchangeable slaves. They were crammed in to living quarters, had a curfew, and sex was monitored and considered immoral. A girl, pretend of immoralities, or serious improprieties, at once loses caste. Her fellow boarders lead at once leave the house, if the keeper does not go off the offender.



In self-protection, therefore, the patron is obliged to put the offender away. In 1834 the Lowell Girls banded together and marched in to the different textile mills and demanded better wages and to be treated better.
