Women in the boarding theaters lived in refinement quarters, a factor that also played a role in the growth of community. A typical boarding house accommodated 25 young women, generally crowded four to octonary in a bedroom. The typical work week for the Lowell Girls was between 70 and 75 hours. The women were grossly underpaid and in many cases were tempered almost exchangeable slaves.
