The Lost Battalion was actually two pluralitys- the First and sec Infantries of the 77th Division. The two battalions had been fighting for the past week, against constant German fire. As the advance was continuing farther into the forest, and as the trees grew denser, the fire increased. On the morning of October 2nd, the 77th Division found themselves at a end poststill before heavily defended German defensive lines. The Germans were fasten within concrete bunkers and barb-wire-topped trenches, determined to make their last stand count against the invaders. The battalions were ordered to break through the lines at a small ravine, which was supposedly undefended. French forces would simultaneously attack the lines tightly fitting Binarville, and both attacks would be c everywhereed with artillery fire. Their primary objectives were roadstead and railroads around the mill. The two battalions, both under the primary leading of study Charles Whittlesey, accordingly pushed through the bed of a ravine from northeastward to south.



The force was under orders to wait for the rest of the lines at Charlevaux mill until the French could reach it. Whittlesey do it through. They suffered 90 casualties, but the battalion captured two officers, 28 privates, and three machine guns from the enemy. They had also gotten over the heavily guarded German trench system. Third Battalion tried to get through. Only Company K made it through, the rest being killed or captured. They joined Major Whittlesey the succeeding(a) morning. That night, the two flanking maneuvers failed. The Germans strung barbed wire across the cart track that the 77th had taken, and successfully closed off the Americans rear.
